The conversion brands we carry

A “hauler” is a factory cab-and-chassis — Freightliner M2, Ford F-450/F-550, GM 3500 — finished by a specialist upfitter with a custom bed, an upgraded interior, and a suspension built to tow. Around Charlotte, where moving a race car is a way of life, the right build comes down to the load. Here’s who we stock and what sets each apart.

Laredo Conversions

Practical, payload-focused builds with a genuinely functional hauler bed and a comfortable cab, without the six-figure premium of the fully custom shops. We’re also the place to spec a new Laredo to your exact build.

SportChassis

The Freightliner-recognized name. OEM-completion M2 builds with composite hauler beds, factory-matched interiors, and the big-block torque the offshore crowd wants.

Schwalbe

Famous for the “Schwalbe Stretch,” a lengthened cab that turns the truck into a true four-door cabin with limo-like rear legroom and air-ride seating throughout.

Western Hauler

The old-school luxury benchmark: high-gloss walnut consoles, exotic leathers, western stitching, and heavy steel hauler beds.

Summit Hauler

Engineered around ride comfort, with sound-deadened soft-touch cabins and a bed design that helps the truck settle under load and cut driver fatigue.

Luxe Trucks

All-aluminum hauler beds and Trailer Saver hitches across Ford, Freightliner, and Dodge chassis; the sister brand to Luxe Fifth Wheels.

2L Customs

Show-truck attitude: custom paint, blacked-out trim, and personalized interiors that bridge a work truck and a statement piece.

Bolt Custom

Integrated-sleeper, open-concept cabins built in aluminum with vibration-proof fasteners for a light, rattle-free ride.

Buying from an out-of-state dealer: North Carolina tax and titling

North Carolina handles vehicle tax a little differently. Instead of a sales tax, it charges a 3% Highway Use Tax (HUT) on the vehicle’s value when you title it. If your truck titles as a recreational vehicle, that HUT is capped at $2,000 — worth confirming how your specific build classifies, because on an expensive hauler the cap can save you real money.

Registration Window

Safety inspection

You’ll title and register within about 30 days of purchase. North Carolina also requires an annual safety inspection statewide, and an emissions inspection in roughly 19 metro counties (including Mecklenburg/Charlotte) — though diesel vehicles and trucks over 8,500 lbs are generally exempt from the emissions test. Counties also assess an annual property tax on vehicles. This is general guidance, not tax advice — confirm current figures with the NCDMV before you buy.

Talk to Someone Who Knows Haulers

Not salespeople — specialists. They’ve spent years in the field and know exactly what North Carolina buyers need from a Hauler.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a special license to drive a hauler in North Carolina?

For personal use you don’t need a CDL, but North Carolina requires a non-commercial Class B for a single vehicle or combination over 26,000 lbs (Class A for the heaviest combinations). It’s a DMV-tested license, not commercial training. Most pickup-based haulers stay on a standard Class C. Confirm your setup with the North Carolina DMV.

What brands of hauler trucks do you sell?

We carry used conversions from the major shops — Laredo, SportChassis, Schwalbe, Western Hauler, Bolt Custom, Summit, Luxe, and 2L Customs — built on Freightliner, Ford, GM, Peterbilt, and Kenworth chassis. We can also spec a brand-new Laredo to your build.

How much is North Carolina tax on a truck bought out of state?

North Carolina charges a 3% Highway Use Tax on the vehicle’s value at titling, instead of sales tax. If the truck titles as a recreational vehicle, the tax is capped at $2,000. Counties also assess an annual property tax on vehicles. Confirm current figures with the NCDMV.

Do I need an inspection to register a hauler in North Carolina?

North Carolina requires an annual safety inspection statewide. Emissions testing applies in about 19 metro counties, including Charlotte’s Mecklenburg County — but diesel vehicles and trucks over 8,500 lbs are generally exempt from the emissions test. Confirm your county and vehicle with the NCDMV.

Are your hauler trucks new or used?

Most of our inventory is hand-picked, reconditioned used trucks — we specialize in low-mileage, well-kept conversions. We also build new Laredo trucks to order for buyers who want to spec a truck from scratch.

What’s the best hauler for towing a race car in North Carolina?

For an enclosed car trailer, a mid-tier Ford F-450/F-550 or dually handles most setups and keeps you on a standard license. For a big multi-car enclosed trailer, a Freightliner M2-112 build gives you the capacity and the steadiest tow — just plan for the non-commercial Class B the weight may require.
